Making+Meaning 2023 Leverages Cutting-Edge Tools for Design Exploration
During the summer, friends, families, and participants of Making+Meaning 2023 enjoyed an extraordinary showcase representing the innovative and transformative design journey of this year's program, as they unveiled the remarkable works of the Making+Meaning Class of 2023. This year’s Making+Meaning curriculum, which redefined design methodologies with the captivating theme of the 'Alphabet,' introduced concepts, techniques, and tools of architecture and design to students with the desire to fulfill curiosities, make a shift in career, or deepen already existing knowledge or skillsets.
Through four distinct geometrical production methodologies, represented by the letters I to L, this year’s talented Making+Meaning participants underwent an exciting exploration of design. Comprised by a final creative portfolio developed throughout the program, students crafted stunning design work which challenged them to rewire traditional understandings and embrace unique ways of making.
Their culminating M+M exhibition showcased the outcomes of their journey—each letter of the 'Alphabet' corresponding to an object with its associated word, resulting from workshops focused on four geometrical production methodologies. Making+Meaning students utilized various design techniques and software from hand-built paper models to Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, 3D-scanning, AI and AR visualization, enriching design language with fresh perspectives and imaginative vision.
Drawing inspiration from previous classes, this year's participants built upon the geometrical syntax initiated by M+M 2021 and 2022, expanding on the interpretations of letters A to H, whereas this year’s Making+Meaning students explored “the magic of mirrors as portals to their creative depths, illuminating reflections in letters I to L.” The skills developed in M+M provide a solid foundation for form generation, applicable to many design scenarios.
“We aim to empower students to embrace design with versatile tools that will continue to shape their academic development and beyond,” shared M+M Coordinator William Virgil. "The creative journey of this year’s Making+Meaning class is a profound reflection. They've embraced the challenge of deconstructing what's seen, and through digital design, they've shattered the surface to reveal the intricate mosaic of self-perception and identity. These students have exemplified the power of design to provoke, unsettle, and inspire, creating a vibrant word of innovation and self-discovery.”
