Spring Show 2023 “SCI-Arc Night Live” Examines the Intersection of Architecture and Entertainment
SCI-Arc is proud to announce the return of its annual student exhibition, Spring Show, curated by faculty member Soomeen Hahm. This year's event, “SCI-Arc Night Live: Premiere Night,” will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 5pm to 8pm, and will showcase the groundbreaking work of SCI-Arc's talented student body.
Spring Show is one of the most anticipated events on the school's calendar, and this year promises to be no exception. The exhibition will feature a diverse range of work, including architectural models, immersive multimedia installations, and interactive experiences. Visitors will be able to engage with the cutting-edge design and technology for which SCI-Arc is internationally renowned. “SCI-Arc Night Live" is part of the school’s ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of experimentation in architecture. The exhibition is an opportunity for students to showcase their extraordinary work and engage with the wider community, while also exploring the ways in which architecture can shape the built environment as well as our experiences of the world around us.
The theme of this year’s Spring Show draws inspiration from the variety shows of the 1970s and 80s, such as "Saturday Night Live" and late-night talk shows. These programs were known for their innovative use of sets and lighting, and often featured recorded segments and live performances by cutting-edge musicians and comedians.
Hahm, design faculty at SCI-Arc and curator of “SCI-Arc Night Live,” is a digital artist, designer, and researcher who has been pushing the boundaries of computational design for over a decade. Her work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions around the world, including the V&A Museum in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Venice Biennale.
“Spring Show is always an exciting event, and we're thrilled to have Soomeen Hahm curating this year's exhibition," said SCI-Arc Director Hernán Díaz Alonso. "Her expertise in digital fabrication and computational design is unparalleled, and we know she'll bring a unique perspective to the exhibition.”
“Our students are constantly challenging the status quo of what's possible in architecture,” he continued. “We can't wait to share the incredible work our students have produced and what they have accomplished to inspire the next generation of designers."
“The general population learns about different disciplines through media, which does not often feature architectural discourse,” explained Hahm, “so there’s not a widespread effort being made to explain what architects do to anyone outside of architecture in any interesting way. This really got me wondering how we could share our world in a way that was also fun and entertaining.”
“SCI-Arc Night Live: Premiere Night” will take place on Saturday, April 29. Doors will open at 5pm, with music and performances beginning at 6pm. Food and drinks will be served throughout the evening.
Spring Show 2023 is free and open to the public and will run through May 10. For more information about SCI-Arc Night Live, please visit the official event page.
