Channel Explores 'Beyond the Frame': Regeneration of Black Cinema 1898–1971

Join SCI-Arc Channel "Beyond the Frame" as they dive into the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures recent temporary exhibition Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971. This short film takes you through the Academy Museum’s exploration of the rich history of Black participation in US cinema from its beginnings to just beyond the civil rights movement.

SCI-Arc Channel’s "Beyond the Frame" tells the story of how Regeneration came to life through curatorial and design decisions and explores the storylines of the exhibition as it seeks to revive lost or forgotten films, filmmakers, and performers for a contemporary audience and showcase the long-standing relationship between film and Black visual culture. Overall, Regeneration highlights the agency many Black artists asserted in their respective crafts despite challenges, revealing their tenacity, immense talent, and unwavering commitment to creative expression.

Jacqueline Stewart

Jacqueline Stewart is a scholar, educator, programmer, author, film archivist, and host of Silent Sunday Nights on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Stewart previously served as Chief Artistic and Programming Officer at the Academy Museum and is a Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago, where she has also served as Director of the Arts + Public Life initiative and the Gray Center for Arts and Inquir. Stewart was named a 2021 MacArthur Fellow and she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018. She has served on the Boards of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) and the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA). She earned her PhD in English from the University of Chicago and her BA in English from Stanford University.

Doris Berger

Doris Berger is a scholar, curator, and author. She oversees the Academy Museum’s curatorial department, shapes the overall exhibitions program with leadership, and curates exhibitions. She was previously a Getty postdoctoral fellow, a curator at the Skirball Cultural Center, and the director of the Kunstverein Wolfsburg, Germany. Berger earned a PhD in Cultural Studies (focus on art and film history) from the University of Art in Braunschweig, Germany, and an MA in Romance Studies and Art History from the University of Vienna, Austria.

Rhea L. Combs

Rhea L. Combs is a scholar, curator, and professor. Combs was previously Supervisory Curator of Film and Photography at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). She also served as the head of NMAAHC’s Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts. Her writings have been featured in anthologies, peer reviewed academic journals, and exhibition catalogues on a range of topics including African American women filmmakers, popular culture, Black visual aesthetics, and the history of photography. Combs holds a BA from Howard University, an MA from Cornell University, and a PhD from Emory University.

Shraddha Aryal
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, EXHIBITIONS

Shraddha Aryal is a strategic planner, designer, and a creative thinker. She is currently Executive Vice President of Exhibitions at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and shapes the overall exhibitions program and experience with the museum’s curatorial and leadership teams. She was a key stakeholder in opening the Academy Museum and its exhibitions, working closely with Renzo Piano Building Workshop, WHY Architecture, and Gensler. Before joining the Academy Museum, she served as Head of Exhibitions at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, which is part of Qatar Museums Authority. Aryal received her Master’s in Interior Architecture from Rhode Island School of Design and BA in Graphic Design from Oregon State University.
