M+M Student Manuela Ardila Rincón on Art, Distortion, and Transforming Environments
Manuela Ardila Rincón is currently in her last semester of undergraduate studies in architecture as a grant holder at the Los Andes University in Bogotá, Colombia, the city where she was born and raised. Simultaneously, she works as a teacher assistant in the Video Games and Robots research group at Los Andes University directed by professors Daniela Atencio and Claudio Rossi.
Manuela Ardila Rincón cursa actualmente su ultimo semestre de pregrado en arquitectura como becaria en la Universidad de los Andes en Bogotá, Colombia, ciudad donde nació y creció. Simultáneamente se desempeña como monitora en el semillero de investigación de Video juegos y Robots en la Universidad de los Andes dirigido por los profesores Daniela Atencio y Claudio Rossi.
We spoke to Manuela (en inglés y español) to learn more about her background, interests in architecture, and experience as a student in this summer’s Making+Meaning program.
ARCADE GLITCH
The letter A was taken as input and turned into a three-dimensional object, then the subdivision of the different faces of the letter was made to work with the particles of this and generate the different effects achieved. A scenery was created by duplicating and modifying the main A using it as part of the landscape and as independent objects.
La letra A y se convirtió en un objeto tridimensional, posteriormente en Cinema 4D se realizó la subdivisión de las diferentes caras de la letra para trabajar con las partículas de esta y generar los diferentes efectos logrados. Un escenario duplicando y modificando la A principal utilizándola como parte del paisaje y como objetos independientes.
Hi Manuela! Thank you for speaking with us. What has your experience been like in the Making+Meaning program?
It was an extremely rewarding experience for my training process as an architect, because it allowed me to design objects and scenarios from the management of information and the creation of three-dimensional objects. In addition, it put me in contact with different visions of architecture from the culture and experience of my classmates, professors, and guests. The program allowed me to unleash my creativity and propose stories around each composition, to make not only striking objects but a whole plot about them.
Hola Manuela! Gracias por hablar con nosotros. ¿Cómo ha sido tu experiencia en el programa Making+Meaning?
Fue una experiencia muy enriquecedora para mi proceso de formación como arquitecta, debido a que me permitió diseñar objetos y escenarios desde el manejo de información y la creación de objetos tridimensionales. Además, me puso en contacto con visiones diferentes desde la cultura y experiencia de mis compañeros, profesores, e invitados. El programa me permitió dar rienda suelta a mi creatividad y a proponer historias alrededor de cada composición, para no hacer solo objetos llamativos sino toda una trama alrededor de estos.
Can you talk about any projects of which you are particularly proud?
In general, I feel very happy with the work done during Making+Meaning, but without a doubt I think the work I did in the last week called (D)istortion is incredible. It was a lot of fun to do, and I really like the originality of the shapes with which I built the object and the varied paths that are generated. I think about the idea of making from something purely geometric, a space that can be inhabited and traversed. I also like the color palette and the materials used. They give a unique aesthetic quality to the work, and it even seems that the material changes as you walk through the object, it has 100% my personal stamp.
¿Puedes hablar de algún proyecto del que te sientas especialmente orgullosa?
En general, me siento muy contenta con el trabajo realizado durante Making+Meaning pero sin duda creo que el trabajo que hice en la última semana llamado (D)istortion es increíble. Fue muy divertido de hacer y me gusta mucho la originalidad de las formas con las que construí el objeto y los diferentes recorridos que se generan. Pienso en la idea de hacer de algo únicamente geométrico, un espacio que puede ser habitado y recorrido. También, me gusta la paleta de colores y los materiales utilizados, le dan una cualidad estética especial al trabajo e incluso parece que el material cambia a medida que se recorre el objeto, tiene 100% mi sello personal.
BRIGHTNESS
By duplicating and deforming the letter B in a controlled manner, interesting three-dimensional pieces were obtained that gradually blurred the initial shape. These pieces are the starting point to compose an object and later a scene that with bright materials, contrasts, superimpositions and colors become complex and striking images.
Por medio de duplicar y deformar de manera controlada la letra B se obtuvieron piezas tridimensionales interesantes que van desdibujando poco a poco la forma inicial. Estas piezas son el punto de inicio para componer un objeto y posteriormente una escena que, con materiales brillantes, contrastes, superposiciones y colores se convierten en imágenes complejas y llamativas.
How did your interest in architecture and design first develop?
Since I was a child, I have had a special interest in art in general and particularly in the visual arts, because my father is an artist. For as long as I can remember I have been in contact with this creative and speculative world. When I was about to enter college, I was not completely clear about what I wanted to study, but I knew it would be something related to the possibility of proposing and materializing ideas. Initially, I was interested in studying design because I have always been very creative and very good manually, but finally I decided to study architecture because I was passionate about the idea of literally transforming the environment in which we live.
¿Cómo surgió tu interés por la arquitectura y el diseño?
Desde pequeña he tenido un interés especial por el arte en general y particularmente por las artes visuales debido a que mi papá es artista, siempre he estado en contacto con este mundo creativo y especulativo. Cuando iba a ingresar a la universidad no tenía total claridad de lo que quería estudiar, pero sabía que sería algo relacionado con la posibilidad de proponer y materializar ideas. En principio me llamo la atención estudiar diseño porque siempre he sido muy creativa y muy buena manualmente, pero finalmente me decidí por arquitectura porque me apasiono la idea de transformar literalmente el entorno en el que vivimos.
How have your approaches or interests changed both during and as a result of being in the program?
The program took away my fear of pushing colors and materials to the limit, I usually tried to stick as much as possible to the most genuine version of the materials I know, but it was an incredible opportunity to invent materials, create fictitious spaces and generate a whole narrative around those scenarios. The program additionally provided me with new tools to design, thinking about starting with a three-dimensional object or with organized data and not with a two-dimensional image like an architectural plan, that really changes and enriches the final result. Furthermore, I think that being in Making+Meaning reaffirmed my interest in the production of images and digital content and expanded my vision of all that can be achieved by combining technology and creativity.
¿Cómo han cambiado tus enfoques o intereses durante y como resultado de tu participación en el programa?
El programa me quito el temor a llevar al límite los colores y los materiales, usualmente intentaba adherirme todo lo posible a la versión más genuina de los materiales que conozco, pero fue una oportunidad increíble poder inventar materiales, crear espacios ficticios y poder generar toda una narrativa alrededor de esos escenarios. El programa también me proporciono herramientas nuevas para diseñar, pensando en iniciar con un objeto tridimensional o con datos organizados y no con una imagen bidimensional como lo es un plano arquitectónico, eso realmente cambia y enriquece el resultado final. Por otro lado, pienso que estar en Making+Meaning reafirmo mi interés en la producción de imágenes y contenido digital y abrió mi visión de todo lo que se puede lograr uniendo la tecnología y la creatividad.
C-LHOUETTE
By converting these lines into an object, it is used by placing it around a surface resulting from the deformation of the letter C by means of controlled procedures. This resulting object is the piece with which different scenarios of what appears to be an uninhabited world in which these bodies from another planet perch.
Al convertir estas líneas en un objeto, se utiliza ubicándolo alrededor de una superficie resultante de la deformación de la letra C por medio de procedimientos controlados. Este objeto resultante es la pieza con la que se construyen diferentes escenarios de lo que parece ser un mundo deshabitado en el que se posan estos cuerpos de otro planeta.
What first drew you to apply for Making+Meaning?
The first thing that led me to apply to Making+Meaning was the curiosity that caused me to see the work that had been done in previous versions of the program when I saw it in one of my Computational Thinking classes at my current university. When I saw a little more in depth what Making+Meaning was about I was surprised that no previous knowledge in architecture was needed, there is practically no limitation to participate in it. I thought it was a great opportunity to learn new tools and ways to design for my degree project and also to get to know firsthand what is being done at SCI-Arc.
¿Qué fue lo primero que le llevó a presentarse a Making+Meaning?
Lo primero que me llevo a aplicar a Making+Meaning fue la curiosidad que me causo ver el trabajo que se había realizado en versiones anteriores del programa cuando lo vi en una de mis clases de Pensamiento Computacional en mi universidad actual. Cuando vi un poco más a fondo de lo que se trataba el programa me llamo la atención que no se necesitara ningún conocimiento previo en arquitectura, prácticamente no hay ninguna limitación para participar en el programa. Pensé que era una gran oportunidad para aprender nuevas herramientas y formas de diseñar para mi proyecto de grado y también para conocer de primera mano lo que se hace en SCI-Arc.
What was the most surprising discovery during your time in the program?
I was absolutely surprised by the results of all the students who were in the program because of the quality and quantity of work we did during one month. Even though we all learned the same tools and procedures, everyone's work was unique and had their own personal stamp. One of my favorite parts of Making+Meaning was seeing all the portfolios at the end and how each of us had interpreted and employed what we had learned in a particular and different way. The program is an enhancer of what each person brings in their head.
¿Cuál fue el descubrimiento más sorprendente durante su estancia en el programa?
Me sorprendió mucho el resultado de todos los estudiantes que estuvimos en el programa por la calidad y cantidad de trabajo que hicimos durante un mes. A pesar de que todos aprendimos las mismas herramientas y los mismos procedimientos, el trabajo de cada uno fue único y tuvo el sello personal de cada uno. Una de mis partes favoritas de Making+Meaning fue ver al final todos los portafolios y como cada uno de nosotros había interpretado y utilizado lo aprendido de una manera particular y diferente. El programa es un potencializador de lo que cada persona trae en su cabeza.
(D)ISTORTION
The volumetry of different Ds with interesting qualities is used to make extractions from them, obtaining pieces with which different objects are composed and superimposed on each other generating multiple visual effects.
Se utiliza la volumetría de diferentes Ds con cualidades interesantes para realizar extracciones de ellas, obteniendo piezas con las que se componen diferentes objetos y se sobreponen unos a otros generando múltiples efectos visuales.
What wisdom would you impart to future Making+Meaning applicants or students?
To future applicants I would tell them not to hesitate to apply to the program and apply for the scholarship because it is an unmissable experience that will give them many tools to start with the right foot their master's degree or whatever they want to do in relation to architecture. In addition, the program allows you to build a very good portfolio, make contacts around the world and get closer to your style and your own way of designing. And to the prospective students I would say do not be afraid to experiment, to apply everything you like, colors, materials, personal interests, your culture, etc. Making+Meaning is the perfect space to discover, experiment and do everything your creativity allows you to do.
¿Qué sabiduría impartiría a los futuros solicitantes o estudiantes de Making+Meaning?
A los futuros aspirantes les diría que no duden en presentarse al programa y aplicar a la beca porque es una experiencia imperdible que les va a brindar muchas herramientas para iniciar con el pie derecho su maestría o cualquier cosa que quieran hacer en relación con arquitectura. Además, el programa permite elaborar un muy buen portafolio, hacer contactos alrededor del mundo y acercarse a su estilo y su propia manera de diseñar. Y a los futuros estudiantes les diría que no tengan miedo de experimentar, de aplicar todo lo que les gusta, los colores, materiales, intereses personales, su cultura, etc. Making+Meaning es el espacio perfecto para descubrir, experimentar y hacer todo lo que su creatividad les permita.
What are you most excited about moving forward, in terms of your future?
I am excited to do a very interesting and authentic degree project applying everything I learned this summer. Also, the possibility of continuing with a master's degree at SCI-Arc since Making+Meaning allowed me to know first-hand what is done at the university and generates great expectations to continue my academic career with that futuristic and speculative vision that characterizes SCI-Arc. Ultimately, I want to be able to discover my place in architecture doing what I enjoy and leave a positive mark in everything I do as a professional.
¿Qué es lo que más te entusiasma de cara al futuro?
Me entusiasma hacer un proyecto de grado muy interesante y autentico aplicando todo lo que aprendí este verano. También la posibilidad de continuar con una maestría en SCI-Arc ya que Making+Meaning me permitió conocer de primera mano lo que se hace en la universidad y me genera gran expectativa continuar mi carrera académica con esa visión futurista y especulativa que caracteriza a SCI-Arc. En definitiva, quiero poder encontrar mi lugar en la arquitectura haciendo lo que disfruto y dejar una marca positiva en todo lo que haga como profesional.
