Taskforce Statement

The Resilient Futures Task Force, comprised of architects and educators at SCI-Arc, is a dedicated initiative aimed at assisting communities impacted by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. As a leader in architectural education and innovation, SCI-Arc recognizes the urgent need to provide support, knowledge, and long-term solutions for homeowners navigating the challenges of rebuilding after wildfire destruction.

Mission & Goals

The Resilient Futures Task Force is committed to fostering resilience through education, community engagement, and advanced research. By leveraging SCI-Arc’s expertise and collaborations with professionals in architecture, design, engineering, landscape and technology, we aim to help the affected communities rebuild and create more fire-resilient environments

Short-Term Goals: Immediate Support & Information

Medium-Term Goals: Education & Community Engagement

  • Host symposia, workshops, and panel discussions at SCI-Arc, bringing together homeowners, architects, landscape architects, urban planners, and policymakers.
  • Establish an open forum for affected residents to engage with SCI-Arc faculty and design professionals, fostering collaborative rebuilding solutions.
  • Launch community-driven design initiatives, where students and faculty provide conceptual rebuilding strategies for impacted neighborhoods.

Long-Term Goals: Research & Technological Innovation

  • Conduct research on wildfire-resistant materials, resilient construction techniques, landscape and urban planning strategies to mitigate future wildfire risks.
  • Develop AI-driven tools to assist homeowners tailored for wildfire-prone areas, ensuring affordability and safety.
  • Establish a permanent resilience lab within SCI-Arc to explore advanced design methodologies for climate-adaptive architecture.

Through these initiatives, the SCI-Arc Resilient Futures Task Force seeks to share knowledge and learn more about the ecological complexities of the Southern California environment, and in doing so empower homeowners, provide architectural and landscape solutions, and shape the future of fire-resilient communities in Los Angeles and beyond.
