Recent Grad Wins 2011 Julius Shulman Emerging Talent Award

Phillip Ramirez (B.Arch '11) received this year’s Julius Shulman Emerging Talent Award and a scholarship on behalf of SNR Denton and the Los Angeles Business Council. His award was announced yesterday at the 41st Annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards ceremony hosted at the Los Angeles Marriott at LA Live.

“Congrats to Phillip… another generation comet” said Director Eric Owen Moss. “SCI-Arc is extremely proud of him.”

Ramirez submitted his undergraduate thesis project “Interval Space” (shown here) for the annual competition organized by the LABC. His undergraduate thesis advisor this past spring was faculty member Herwig Baumgartner of B+U.

In his own words:
"As a site and program for this investigation, my thesis project proposes the Brooklyn Academy of Performing Arts (BAPA). Located next door to the Brooklyn Academy of Music and in the vicinity of the Harvey Theatre, The Theatre for a New Audience and St. Anne’s Warehouse, the triangular site necessitates a vertical scheme in the spirit of Jean Nouvel’s Tokyo Opera House, and thereby evoking the double-spirit of ‘performance space’ in architecture. Contained inside the “high rise” scheme are three performance theatres utilized by both patrons and students. Embedded above, below and around, the three divisions of the school are infiltrated and improvised upon by the interval spaces."
