Alumna, Faculty Member Heather Flood Exhibits in COLA Show Opening September 30

Earlier this year, SCI-Arcís Heather Flood (M.Arch Ď04) received one of the prestigious 2012 C.O.L.A. Individual Artist Fellowships from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Today, she is putting the finishing touches on her installation for the C.O.L.A. group exhibition set to open September 30, 2-5pm at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery.

Her project, Wonder Wall, is located at the intersection between architectural and graphic form. It explores the large visual effects that can be produced when two-dimensional graphic patterns are translated into three-dimensional constructions.

More specific, Wonder Wall translates a swatch of tartan fabric into a three dimensional construction made out of interlocked strips of perforated colored aluminum. The intersecting vertical and horizontal strips of aluminum gently rotate to form a grid with multiple overlapping conditions. As the aluminum overlaps, new colors begin to emerge and a gradient field of porous openings is created. Wonder Wall slips between two and three dimensions into a space of 2.5D where visual matter and material construction synchronize into one synthetic experience.

Other visual artists featured include Lynne Berman, Martin Durazo, Diane Gamboa, Mark Steven Greenfield, Steven Hurd, Maryrose Medonza and Rika Ohara. Conversations with the artists are scheduled Saturday, October 13, 7pm and Friday, October 19, 7pm.
