2012 Graduate Thesis Weekend & Graduation Ceremony

SCI-Arc is pleased to announce the 2012 Graduate Thesis Weekend & Graduation Ceremony, taking place September 7-9, 2012 on the SCI-Arc campus in downtown Los Angeles.

A culmination of up to three years of study and coursework leading toward the Master of Architecture and M.Des.R post-graduate degrees, the public three-day event has students presenting their final projects to critics from all over the world. Thesis weekend culminates with an all-school commencement ceremony for both undergrads and grads.

A celebration of academic achievement, SCI-Arc's grad thesis weekend is regarded among theoreticians and practicing architects as a major forum for the discussion of fresh insights and innovative concepts in architecture.

In addition to attending presentations and reviews, participants and guests can also tour the school and its facilities. This September visitors will also have the opportunity to visit SCI-Arc's new Hispanic Steps—a multi-purpose indoor arts venue designed and built with the help of a transformative grant from ArtPlace.

On Sunday, September 9, students, their families and guests are invited to participate in the all-school graduation ceremony, where degrees are conferred to graduating students in the B.Arch, M.Arch and post-graduate programs.

This year's commencement speaker is renowned architectural theorist
Jeffrey Kipnis, a professor of architectural design and theory at the Ohio State Knowlton School of Architecture. Kipnis has also served as special graduate thesis adviser for this year’s graduating class.

The ceremony will be held in the graduation pavilion located in the SCI-Arc parking lot. Dubbed Netscape, the pavilion was designed and built in summer 2011 by faculty members Jenny Wu and Dwayne Oyler of Oyler Wu Collaborative.

For those attending the event, on-site parking is available at 350 Merrick Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013. Students, family members and friends unable to attend the ceremony can watch it broadcast live at

Graduate thesis projects will remain on view throughout the school until September 14, 2012. In addition, a special Selected Thesis Exhibition will be on display September 17-28.
