SCI-Arc is pleased to announce the 2011 Graduate Thesis Weekend & Graduation Ceremony, taking place September 9-11, 2011 on the SCI-Arc campus in downtown Los Angeles.
Friday, September 9, 2-5pm
Saturday, September 10, 9am-6pm
Sunday, September 11, 10am-5pm
Detailed schedule and floor plan will be available on site
A culmination of up to three years of study and coursework—leading toward the M.Arch and M.Des.R graduate degrees—the public two-day event has students presenting their final projects to critics from all over the world, and ends with an all-school commencement ceremony for both undergrads and grads.
Pritzker-prize winner Thom Mayne of Morphosis, a SCI-Arc founding faculty and trustee, delivers the commencement speech at SCI-Arc's 2011 graduation ceremony in Los Angeles:
A celebration of academic achievement, SCI-Arc's grad thesis weekend is regarded among theoreticians and practicing architects as a major forum for the discussion of fresh insights and innovative concepts in architecture. Among guest jurors attending this year's thesis reviews are Peter Cook, Joe Day, Jeffrey Kipnis, Greg Lynn, Eric Owen Moss, Jesse Reiser, and many others.
Graduate thesis projects will remain on view throughout the school through September 13, 2011. In addition, a special Selected Thesis Exhibition will be on display September 19-30, with an opening reception and discussion featuring Director Eric Owen Moss and exhibiting students scheduled on Friday, September 23, 7pm.

During thesis weekend, in addition to attending presentations and reviews participants and guests can also tour the school and its facilities. New this year, visitors will have the option to visit SCI-Arc's brand new Robot House—a state-of-the-art multi-robot platform unique at an architecture school in the US.
On Sunday, September 11, students, their families and guests are invited to participate in the all-school graduation ceremony, where degrees are conferred to graduating students in the B.Arch, M.Arch and post-graduate programs. This year's commencement speaker is Thom Mayne, Founder and Design Director at Morphosis and a SCI-Arc founding faculty member; Mayne was also recently elected to the school's Board of Trustees.
In what has become a tradition at SCI-Arc in recent years, the graduation ceremony will be held in a custom-built graduation pavilion located in the SCI-Arc parking lot. Every year, incoming students help the graduating class build their graduation pavilion, designed this year by faculty members Jenny Wu and Dwayne Oyler of Oyler Wu Collaborative.
For those attending the event, on-site parking is available at 350 Merrick Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013.
Students, family members and friends unable to attend the ceremony can watch it broadcast live at www.sciarc.edu/live.
